Important changes to the RSA legal expenses cover

Important changes

RSA legal expenses was administered by Cigna Legal Protection Ltd. (Cigna). As part of this arrangement Cigna used the services of a solicitor, Lyons Davidson Ltd. (Lyons Davidson), so if you called to make a claim or seek some advice you will have spoken to Lyons Davidson.

On the 1 December 2017, Cigna announced that it was closing its Legal Protection business. Therefore, RSA has entered into an arrangement with Arc Legal Assistance Ltd. (Arc) to take over the administration of RSA's legal expenses cover, effective 1st November 2018.

Who will I now be dealing with?

As Arc also use the services of Lyons Davidson, under our new agreement with Arc, your call will still be answered by a member of the Lyons Davidson team.

Arc is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Their firm reference number is 305958.

Lyons Davidson is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

What information do I need if I call?

Lyons Davidson will ask some initial questions to ensure that you are directed to the most appropriate person to help. This will include details of your policy and your renewal date. It would be helpful if you had these details to hand when you call. The number to call is detailed in your policy documentation.

In tax and health and safety matters, Lyons Davidson will give basic advice on procedural matters. They will introduce you to specialists to help you more fully. These specialists are QDOS for tax advice and Care First for health and safety matters.

Why is our legal expenses administered by a third party?

Management of legal expenses is governed by The Insurance Companies (Legal Expenses Insurance) Regulations 1990 to ensure that there is no conflict of interest. The regulations stipulate that:

  • No member of RSA staff who is concerned with that management of claims under Legal Expenses Insurance carries on similar activity in relation to another general class of general insurance business; and
  • RSA shall entrust the management of claims under legal expenses insurance contracts to a separate entity.
