Who are you?

I’m Leon and I’ve been at RSA since April 2020. I’m an actuary with over 20 years of experience working in general insurance roles in the UK and Europe. I’m also a parent, a husband and a runner; usually in that order!

What was the biggest influence for you to start a career in the Pricing/Actuarial field?

I wanted a career where continual learning wasn’t just a possibility but a necessity. I wanted a career in a profession, and an industry, that plays a valuable role in society. I wanted to use my maths background to develop skills that are internationally transferrable. And I wanted to work in teams of really smart and motivated people. An actuarial career in general insurance definitely ticks all of those boxes.

What do you think are the best skills that you bring to your job?

Communication. It’s a crucial element of any actuarial role. The work we do is often complex but we need to be able to make it accessible to a wide audience of stakeholders and we also need to be able to inspire those around us to create additional value by always looking for the next technical development or application of skills.

What advice would you give a candidate who wants to join RSA in the pricing or Actuarial team?

Bring your whole self to work, be ready to learn, be open to new ideas and opportunities. I honestly believe there is no better environment than RSA in which to see just how good your best can be.

What’s a goal you have for yourself that you want to accomplish in the next year?

RSA has some exciting growth plans this year. I am looking forward to being able to show that the pricing team has continued to get stronger and has been a key driving force behind the successful delivery of those plans.

The best piece of advice you’ve ever been given is...

Be more direct.
