Our partnership with WWF
We are working with WWF to explore the link between climate change and insurance risk.
By identifying these risks and how they interact, we can manage the impact on our business, capitalise on new opportunities and contribute to sustainable long-term solutions.
Some highlights from the partnership include:
Flood Prevention

Changing weather patterns mean flooding and drought are more frequent than ever.
Our joint report – ‘Dealing with the Deluge: Urban Water Management in a Changing Climate (PDF)’ - argues that sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) can form part of a cost-effective, integrated approach to flood and waste water management while improving urban spaces and benefitting wildlife.
We are supporting an innovative flood alleviation and river restoration project in east London to show how natural flood management while improving urban spaces and benefitting wildlife.
Protecting Marine Environments
Demand from fishing, resource extraction and increased transportation are placing marine environments under ever-growing pressure.
Our ‘Insurance and the Marine Environment’ report highlights the risks facing these fragile ecosystems.
The first in a series of interactive risk maps shows the impact of a hypothetical oil spill in an environmentally sensitive area of Scotland. Over five days it charts the spread of oil as it reaches ports, fish farms and conservation areas. We aim to create similar risk maps in the Canadian coastline, Barents Sea and Baltic Sea.
The aim is to highlight where reducing insured risk overlaps with environmental risk.
The partnership has also helped to support the creation of Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), founded by Forum for the Future and WWF. The SSI brings together some of the biggest players in the maritime sector including RSA, Cargill, Maersk and others to identify global trends and encourage a more sustainable shipping industry.
Renewable Energy
We are investigating how the insurance industry can help remove the barriers facing renewable energy generation such as access to finance and planning.
Our report, ‘Insurance and Renewable Energy’ argues that WWF’s vision of a 100% renewable energy future by 2050 is both technically achievable and cost effective if we can secure greater cooperation between Government, businesses and insurers.
Changing Mindsets
We are working together to raise awareness of vulnerability in the Arctic region due to increasing human activity and climate change.
‘Seeing is Believing’ challenges RSA employees across the globe to compete for the chance to win the trip of a lifetime to the Arctic with WWF.
They will follow in the footsteps of our first Seeing is Believing winner who travelled to Canada’s far north to see first-hand the impact of climate change by coming up with the best green idea in the business.
