Assessing our performance
We benchmark ourselves against competitors and recognised corporate responsibility leaders to ensure that we report on relevant material issues for our industry and reflect best practice.
We identified the following areas where we could improve our CR reporting and performance by:
- Identifying social and environmental risks and opportunities;
- Continuing to improve environmental and H&S targets;
- Reporting supplier assessment results;
- Considering the indirect impacts of insurance and how they contribute to sustainable development.
We are tackling these areas through the ongoing development of responsible products and services, assessing emerging risks, responsible procurement programme and year-on-year improvement in our data collection.

 | FTSE4Good member We remain members of the FTSE4Good index, the responsible investment index for global investors increasingly concerned with the management of environmental and social risks in their portfolios. |
 | Dow Jones Sustainability index member and 'Sector Mover' We were awarded the 2008 'Sector Mover' award by SAM, the research agency who works in collaboration with Dow Jones to assess companies for inclusion into the responsible investment index. Only sustainability leaders are included and approximately 6 billion USD of funds are managed on the basis of DJSI. |
 | Investor Relations Society - 'Best Communication of CR' award We were awarded the Best Communication of Corporate Responsibility for our corporate website in 2008 by the Investor Relations Society. |
 | Observer newspaper 'Best performer' rating in FTSE 350 Ethical Index We were placed 5th out of the FTSE 350 in the Observer 2008 Good Companies Guide. We were the highest rated financial services company in the study carried out by Co-operative Asset Management, Eiris and Innovest. |
 | Hong Kong Company That Cares Award Our business in Hong Kong were awarded the Caring Company Award for the sixth year running due to their efforts for environmental management and community involvement. |
 | Irish energy award Our Irish headquarters was awarded an innovation award for the environmental standards of construction and design utilised. |
