History

RSA has a proud heritage dating back almost 300 years. The current Company structure was created in 1996 following the merger of two of the largest insurance companies in the UK, Royal Insurance and Sun Alliance.  In 2008 we shortened our name to RSA and simplified and refreshed our corporate brand.

In 2008 we changed our name to RSA and simplified and refreshed our corporate brand.
        
         2007
Launched tender offer to buy-out the Codan minority shareholders. Codan was delisted from the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in July 2007.
2006
In 2006 we changed our operational structure to reflect the new strategic focus of the business. The Group is reorganised into three main operational divisions, the UK, International and Emerging Markets.
        
         2006
In September we announced the sale of our US operation to Arrowpoint Capital Corp. The Group delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in October and the sale of the US business completed in March 2007.
2002/03
In 2002 we changed direction, focusing the Group's attention on general insurance. We began by selling or closing a number of businesses, including our life assurance operations, and exited from a number of countries of operation.
        
         Insurance from MORE TH>N2001
MORE TH>N was launched in June 2001 bringing freshness and a new approach to the consumer financial services market in the UK.
1997
We acquired our Canadian personal lines direct business Johnsons. We still trade under the Johnsons brand.
        
         1996
The merger of Royal Insurance and Sun Alliance created Royal & SunAlliance, one of the largest insurance companies in the UK.
1984
SunAlliance acquired Codan in 1984.
        
         1965
Sun Alliance becomes Sun Alliance and London as two of the world's oldest insurers get together.
1959
Sun merges with the Alliance.
        
         1919
Royal merges with Liverpool and London & Globe.
19th Century
In the 19th Century we established operations in the US, Canada, South America, Australia, and Africa. We also had a presence in China and India from 1852 until nationalisation, and we re-opened in China in 1998 and in India in 2000.

The Royal was founded in 1845.
1824
The Alliance was founded in 1824.
        
         18th Century
The Group's international presence emerged in the 18th Century with business ventures in mainland Europe.
1710
The Sun was established. It is the oldest insurance company still trading under its original name.
